Notes from a lightning talk given at OSCON 2008: http://en.oreilly.com/oscon2008/public/schedule/detail/2327

My favorite anarchy is the Portland Ruby Brigade, a local Ruby user group.

Started in 2002 with a handful of Ruby hobbyists - informal meetings made sense

In 2005, the Ruby world changed - Rails brought more people to Ruby from a professional angle

When I joined pdx.rb in 2006, about 20 attendees at meetings, still strong hobbyist influence, but shifting noticeably over the following year. Newer members sometimes have different expectations for how the group will work.

Self organizing meetings are now harder. I recently arrived to one 10 min. late, and everyone was sitting around waiting for someone \"official\" to start.

What have I learned?

Step up. If you want something to happen, start doing it, and recruit others to help.

Don\'t try to impose structure for the sake of structure. Add it when that\'s the most productive choice. A little chaos is ok.

Community Software from Scratch: a brief history of Calagator

* It helps to have a reason: Portland needed a central place to find out what fun geeky things were happening.

* Existing software tools didn\'t really do what the community needed, so various community members discussed building something new.

* But how do you start? Audrey emailed everyone she had ever talked to about needing a local tech calendar and invited them to join a mailing list.

* After a couple of weeks of discussion, the group met up in person to start building a calendar aggregator.

* We copied from a local code sprint group, using index cards, whiteboards, and very short iterations (45 min.) to knock out initial tasks quickly.

* At the end of the first day, we had an application with basic Event and Venue models, and the ability to import hCalendar from Upcoming.

* The group continued to meet every two weeks to continue development.

* As the project progressed, the index cards turned into a bug tracker.
The best way to give me information is by email to spinnerin at gmail dot com.
or Twitter or maybe IRC (I'm spinnerin on freenode and possibly sometimes elsewhere).
Below is a list of sites/services I use and actually make an effort to pay attention to. I have accounts elsewhere, too, but if it's not listed it's probably not a good way to connect with me.
AIM: einespinnerin
